with peter futcher and 7 voice choir

Anna and Richard transformed the Grand Shaft into a canvas of creative expression, composing music that resonated with its choral echoes, pagan processions, and military legacy. The seven-voice choir, assembled and conducted by Peter Futcher weaved into the triple helical form a new purpose—a sanctuary for artistic reverberation. Built over 200 years ago, Dover’s Grand Shaft is a 140-foot-deep marvel, lined with a unique triple staircase. Originally designed for swift soldier transit between Dover’s high forts and the sea, it features a 26-foot-wide shaft and a 180-foot tunnel to the road. Although the three staircases were initially intended to facilitate movement, Dover Unlocked invited stillness into the design reimagining a reverberation chamber to celebrate the human voice and its response to architecture, history and geography.
